Healthcare Flexible Spending Account

A healthcare Flexible Spending Account can be used to pay for IRS eligible expenses found in § 213d of the Internal Revenue Code. Eligible expenses include your copays, deductibles or coinsurance percentages and out-of-pocket expenses for vision, dental, prescription and medical care. To be eligible for reimbursement, the expense must not be reimbursed from another source.

The maximum annual amount that you can put aside in your healthcare Flexible Spending Account is determined by your employer.

A few things to remember:

  1. You and your dependents do NOT have to be enrolled in your employer's health plan to participate in the healthcare Flexible Spending Account.
  2. You can be reimbursed for expenses that are not covered by your insurance (ie: Acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathic visits, vision and orthodontia. Weight loss programs and massage therapy are eligible expenses if they are prescribed by a physician to treat a specific medical condition.)

For additional information on eligible expenses, see Internal Revenue Code 213d.
